Princess Elizabeth visits Jersey

Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II, visited Jersey on 22 June 1949 as part of a wider trip to the Channel Islands. She arrived, with Prince Philip, from Alderney on HMS Anson, and landed at St Helier. It was the first time either of them had stepped foot on the island.

Coming shortly after the end of the occupation, the future queen’s speech to the States of Jersey reminded members that “in recent times the men and women of Jersey have undergone trials and privations unequalled in the island’s long history” but that “the spirit of the Channel Islanders was unbroken and they lost neither faith nor hope”.

They spent the afternoon visiting Howard Davis Park.
