Historian George Balleine is born
Despite his father becoming the Dean of Jersey, George Balleine was actually born in Oxford and lived there until the age of 12, when he went to live with his grandfather in Jersey. He returned to Oxford for university, then took after his father with a life in the church. However, he never forgot Jersey, and retired there in 1938. He remained in the island throughout the occupation, when he was made honorary librarian of the Société Jersiaise, which gave him the opportunity to produce several written works on Jersey’s history.
