Superior Council is established to guide Jersey through the Occupation

Although the German authorities were in ultimate control throughout the Occupation, they channelled much of their authority through the Superior Council, which was made up of members of the States of Jersey and crown officers. The Bailiff, Alexander Coutanche, was the council’s president. Also appointed were Charles Aubin, the Attorney General, and C Harrison, the Solicitor General, plus a further eight department heads.

The equivalent organisation in Guernsey was the Controlling Committee, presided over initially by Major Ambrose Sherwill and, later, John Leale.
