Jersey court sentences sailor to be lashed

When teenager Terence Robinson pleaded guilty to taking a car without permission, Jersey magistrate Major Ralph Voisin sentenced him to twelve lashes with the birch cane at Jersey Prison. Robinson, who lived in Kent, had arrived in Jersey aboard a tanker called Allegrity, so was merely a visitor to the island when the offence took place. It was exacerbated by the fact that, within sight of the spot from which he’d stolen the car, he crashed it into a parked vehicle.

Two years later, on 17 August 1962, another mainland teenager – Clive Foreman – was sentenced to a dozen lashes after snatching a handbag from a local woman in St Helier the previous month.
