The States of Jersey adopts Jèrriais as an official language

In the same month (although a different year) that the States Assembly voted in favour of allowing the use of English in the chamber, it adopted Jèrriais as an official language. As a result, it would be incorporated into official States signs and stationery.

The move was proposed by Deputy Jerry Maçon, the assistant minister for education. He said that preserving Jèrriais was essential to maintaining Jersey’s unique cultural identity and that it should therefore become the third official language of the States Assembly.
