Parishioners break into belfry demanding to hear bells
When the parishioners of St Mary’s demanded that the church bells be rung on Christmas eve, and the Rector, Mr Balleine, refused, they took matters into their own hands. The following day – Christmas day – they broke down the church door to assert what they saw as their ancient rights to hear the bells at Christmas.
